I've no idea what the present day "Hill Walker" kilts are like. Mine was made to measure out of 16 oz weathered MacMillan Hunting tartan. I couldn't tell you how many yards it used, but in those days I had a 30 inch waist, so it may have been less than a full 8 yards. It weighed about the same as my other kilts, although it was a good inch shorter. Like my other kilts it was totally hand stitched, and it cost about as much as they did at the time.

I've just finnished putting a whole lot of work into making my Stillwater wool kilt a lot more like a traditional kilt; mostly the insides. It fits so, so, much better. Though, I was very thankful to finally be able to sew the lining back in because I had been putting it on to see how it fit before that.
I prefer the high waist fit on a kilt, and even my canvas Buzz Kidder is a higher waist than some of the other contemporaries. I would prefer that it have the fell sewn down further, and the waist be a little higher, but I have what I have.
My achrylic Stillwater is next on the chopping block, so I haven't done anything to the canvas kilt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

My three contemporaries are worn at my navel, and have hidden pockets, it all depends on how they are placed and constructed. I bet a Freedom Kilt in tartan does a better than average job of hiding the pockets when in use, check out the pics of the Wiz during the Dumfries Pub Crawl.

Contemporary for the first, you will get allot more wear out of it, get "used" to the attention, and not be worried about ruining an expensive wool kilt. I have two UKs that I wear almost all the time, just very recently got a traditional one, before I can even wear it out I still need to get a black belt, sporran, etc...with the UKs or MUG what ever you want to call it...easy to wear around the house, doing chores, hiking, whatever, without thought of damaging it, most are designed to take the abuse, My UK workman is nicknamed by my family the Armour kilt...it is that tough, Ive worn it as a contractor in Iraq, roofing, spliting wood...etc

Don't own a contemporary, and have no plans to ever buy one, so I guess I'm under the radar of the survey.

I'm not quite the fuddy-duddy my kinsman is, but unless I was to do a lot more driven shooting, I doubt I'd lash out the extra readies for another "hill walker". As far as "machine made" kilts are concerned, I am waaaaaaay to much of a fuddy-duddy (move over Dr. Mac) to want to own one. Sorry, but I'll stick to my tanks.

My first kilt was a traditional and out of personal preferance that is what I wear. Being kilted fulltime for the past 7 months in West Tx a traditional is more comfortable for me due to the heat it is normally in the upper 90's to low 100's

My first was contemporary black canvas from Celtic Croft, due to cost. My wife calls it my training kilt. Now that I wear it all the time she sees the need for a traditional, and knows that I will wear it.
