Although I know you said you liked the look of full leather boots, I'll still toss this out. If you go to www.quanticoboot.com they have a pretty wide selection of military boots, work boots, etc. The old or not so old Devil Dogs on here might be interested as well: Just about every officer in the Corps owns a pair of boots from this place, and you can get a pair of the official issues (EGA branded) for about $80.00 (minor blemish). You could step on a nailgun with those vibram soles and not feel a thing. I personally like the Bates. But that's just me.

p.s. They also provide one free size switch. If it doesn't fit right the first time you can try again.

I haven't read all the sage advice here, but I will say:

    1. Everyone in the military wears combat boots, no matter their height. Don't worry about that.

    2. Sportsmansguide.com is your best bet.

PS. New combat boots can be a real b**ch to break in.

Put on think socks; lace them boots up tight. Go stand in a tub of water to get them pretty well soaked, and then wear them a bit. The leather will conform to the shape of your foot.

Then you will need to treat the leather--saddle soap 'em to get the factory gunk off--and shine 'em good.

    Inspection at 0-seven hundred.
