For what it's worth, "dress" tartans are associated with the woman's historical arisaid garment. In other words, it's "dress" like a woman wears, vice "dress" meaning more formal (dress blues, etc...).
My humble suggestion is to stay away from the dress tartan. I'm guessing it's probably a custom-weave, anyway, so it's probably a moot point. Best of luck!

Shaw tartans
Geb Reilly is who I usually buy fabric from, this is one of his listings. It is a double-width piece four yards long. Don't know if it is enough for a great kilt.

I found the Tartan I was hunting! It is Shaw of Tordarroch Green and is supplied
by me own Clan Shaw for $25 per yard. Sounds like a wee deal to me ith:
