The summer of 1988, I was living with my parents in Basking Ridge and had a good job at AT&T. That year I went in with a couple of guys from work to rent a house in Belmar close to the south end of the beach. I very much looked forward to the weekends down there. I managed to make it my personal get-away from almost everyone - including my roommates there. I spent the days on the north end of the beach, late afternoons in Asbury for the T-dances and beer gardens, usually ending up having an impromptu cookout with new friends, back to the bars in Asbury until closing, then off to a diner that was only open starting at last call for greasy breakfasts to help with the hangovers. In the morning I'd return to the house for a nap and refresh, doing my part to keep the place clean, despite my not being there much. My friends wanted to know where I'd slipped off to some evenings, but I told them if I had wanted to rent a house with my mother I could have. They were terrific friends and gave me my space.
Around that time I realized it was time to leave the nest, but searching for real estate in NJ, I discovered that what I wanted was out of reach for me at 24 or 25 years old. I put in for a transfer to Cincinnati, and managed to make a comfortable life here...
...but boy, do I miss the shore!
Regards,
Rex.
At any moment you must be prepared to give up who you are today for who you could become tomorrow.

Rex, I know how you feel man!
Then there is something special about Belmar, and from what my folks tell me there always has been. Pt. was where I grew up, and it is a very different place now, but still and all, has the going home feel to it!
Jersey has certainly not gotten cheaper either, and the taxes are bizarrely insane. I don't know how people in Jersey afford to live in Jersey. Knock on wood though, and I say this with relative certainty, that house will always be in the family, and it has the energy and experience of generations of family!

A bit off subject but couldn't help but think what a small world, as I sit here at my desk in Minnesota wearing a Highlands NJ T-Shirt. Reading a thread on a Kilt Forum about the Jersey shore. Kinda weird

Growing up for my family it was The Wildwoods and Cape May.
During the Doo Wop Music era.
At that time there was a definite “class” (for lack of a better word) difference between the summer visitors to North Wildwood, Wildwood, and Wildwood Crest, and Cape May.

I hope this doesn't give New Jersey a bad reputation now. I'd hate to see the good state's name sullied.

It's a tourist town - doubt it was locals

There's nothing we could say about New Jersey here that would give it a worse reputation than what it has garnered from comedians for decades.

Here's the thing, there we were enjoying some well deserved family time my ten year old son walking down the boardwalk next to me,instead of running ahead,(with mom and grandmother) He recently told me that he would like to have his own kilt. There were the usual people pointing, and wispering, those laughing and the second looks, when a woman walks by and says loud "If you're going to be Gay you might as well be proud of it!' my son looked at me and i thld him "there is no cure for stupid, and in this world there are a lot of people like that." As we walked down the boardwalk in the lights and sounds, and looking in the shops a guy sitting on the rail next to the beach yells at the top of his lungs 'Look were being invaded by Canadians!!!" BREATHE......slightly adjust my neck side to side smile and keep walking.Pizza,Italian ice not for that day. After getting back to the room I sat out on the deck with a Guiness ,and a few tunes on the chanter. I told my son there are good and bad folks wherever you go, its the laughs that make memories. I hope to get him his kilt, and take him to bethlehem PA. for the Celtic fling, and next year kilted kite flying at the same beach!!
