One feature that comes through strongly is the abundance of facial hair. I see Willie MacDuff isn't wearing a sporran but from the looks of his jacket uses his pockets instead. No doubt full of all kinds of fishing lures!

Yep. During the '45, old John Gordon of Glenbucket was described as riding a grey Highland pony while wearing his Feileadh-Mhor.

I think the Haag painting shows a kilted ghillie catching a ride across the river, so only shows the kilt being worn mounted temporarily.
