I went to two Burns Suppers in Chicago last winter. Both nights it was about 9º F with below zero wind chill factors. With a wool kilt, wool kilt hose and appropriate coat I felt great. My knees were a bit chilly but since I was totally comfortable above and below the knees, it didn't bother me.

Alaskan Kilted Guy used to have a pic of himself kilted in front of a digital sign reading -30º F (The pic has since been deleted). But here's a thread of him grilling outside in temps of 15-20º F http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/g...x.html?t=35207.

This would be normal wear for me in the winter, the kilt is from What Price Glory, and is 22oz wool, the hose are wool, and again from What Price Glory. The Jacket is Harris Tweed and I'm wearing a very heavy sweater, with Caterpillar boots.

Or something like this if it gets a bit warm.

Welcome from across Lake Huron in Ontario! I wear kilts in the winter and it gets VERY cold here at times.

I can answer that for myself- it's because an 8 yard 16 oz kilt is just too hot to wear in the summer! A nice pair of Lewis Rich kilt hose and an 8 yard 16 oz'er and, you'll be just fine- especially if you have a jacket- or in my case, a trench coat. (Rocky Mountain winters are nothing to sneeze at, either... or maybe they are... )

I've worn as light as 13oz wool in Iowa in January. Would not recommend regimental and endorse all the other comments about good wool hose, jackets and hats.

I agree with what's been already said: gloves for hands, thick hose for feet and legs, multiple layers on the body, a scarf and a good wool cap for the head.

Hmmm... I was wearing a slightly long kilt (just below the knee) in sub zero temps, and will be doing so again. And always go regimental: just keep your legs together! ;)

If you're in Michigan, you might want to look up Angus Harvey for your first kilt. Good quality, reasonable prices.

Here is what I wear when it’s really cold here in the Alps.

Otherwise, on a nice sunny winter’s day, I will wear a waistcoat and “bunker” (that’s a 22oz tweed in a Double Box Pleated Kilt by L.C.)
