A truly excellent San Francisco based company with something like 400+ single malts to choose from! They also have a retail shop that is quite worth visiting if you happen to be in the area.
One of my current favorites, and the unofficial Clan MacFarlane signature malt is Scapa from the Islands of Orkney. They recently released a lovely 16 year.

Had a bottle of Scapa a while back. Haven't been able to track down any more - great stuff!
You can taste the salt and the peat - even thought the malt isn't peated, there's so much in the water that it comes through.

If I'm buying, Glen Salen, someone else buying: Nearly anything. Have't found a whisky yet that I don't like.
Glen Salen seems to be a vatted malt. Label says it's "pure malt" and "SELECTED PURE MALT SCOTCH WHISKIES MATURED AND MELLOWED IN OAK CASKS IN SCOTLAND".
Sells for about $20/750ml in the Virginia ABC stores.

My favorite for the time being is Laphroaig Quarter Cask. But now I'm not a big collector and has never tasted many of the finer sinlge malts.
My plot No. is 364,979 with Laphroaig.

This is great to see some of the single malts I've been sipping (Lagavulin, Highland Park, Laphroaig), but even better to find out about some of the lesser expensive ones out there. There used to be "tastings" back in Illinois at the larger liquor stores, but here in Colorado we don't have them, so it's great to hear about alternatives. For me, an aged Lagavulin with a Nicaraguan 6x54 Maduro cigar and about 2-3 hours to enjoy both.

I like most all of them - even some tasty blends that are out there.
Lately I've been sipping some Balvenie Doublewood and Glenfiddech Solera - and enjoying them. For blends I've been liking Johnny Walker Blue
I always have Laphroaig (most of them) around - People either love them or hate them, for some it's like drinking diesel fuel for others it like nectar of the gods

I find that with the bowmore... I had a 18 year old at a pub, fresh bottle, and well, my friend were like "dude that smells like lighter fluid...ok to be fair, zippo oil, but still... it wasn't that bad to sip but, it was....different... that's what I'll say..
Having said i know some swear by the stuff...
I particular type of scotch drinker goes for the Islays first :P

As many will know Scotland is world famous for it's alcoholics so we tend to have a large share of our supermarkets turned over to booze. If you go in the pubs here its very seldom you see an older drinker without a chaser.
In my local supermarket they have about a third/half of an isle turned over to Whiskey. You can get ten year old, 20 year old , single malt, Irish, American, Polish etc. etc I am spoiled for choice here. You see people coming out of supermarkets with boxes of the stuff.

I feel like this is the perfect thread to ask a question I have been searching for answer for about a month now. I would like to start enjoying Scotch as I have only heard great things (typically my drink of choice is a big pint of Guinness or Murphys). I recently Tried a Glenlivet 12 yr and it seemed a bit harsh. But I was told not to be discouraged.
Any suggestions for [sober] piper who is looking for a smoother Scotch to end his evenings with?
