Should we not stick with musicals featuring men wearing unbifurcated garments (such as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Jesus Christ Superstar, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, ...)?

Buckley glasses> Tonight Ladies and ah Gentlemen, we shall be talking about American Musical Theater, ah...especially that form of the great white way that particually has to do ah..ah.. with Male Unbificated Garments ahh affectionaly known by their wearers as Mugs ahh also known as Kilts, sarrongs, togas or even Lava- Lavas................. Hmmm. We could apply a 2-degrees-of-separation rule there, since it's based on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, which was originally staged with some players in unbifurcated tunics and others in dresses. Same for Kiss Me, Kate, The Boys From Syracuse, and Galt McDermot's Two Gentlemen of Verona, not to mention From A Jack to a King, based on Macbeth. And then there are the operas...

OK I have to chime in here and say that Carousel (protagonist is a murder and starts the show dead) and Show Boat (miscegenation) had very advanced plots for their day. Quite shocking. They were not warm and fuzzy musicals.

Well I'll step off into the abyss. Having been involved in both musical and opera production both on the stage and in the pit, I have come away with one simple statement. Either you like or you don't. The best example of a convert I can come up with is Cher in "Moonstruck" as she talked about he experience seeing "La Bohem" with Nick Cage.

Yes, the American musical through the early 60s was mostly a fantasy land of idealized ideas and plots trying to deal with complicated situations. Try not to over analyze and just enjoy the music and dancing.

Wouldn't it be wounderful to just walk over a bridge into a simple life and leave the rat race. In a Kilt of course!

Now this is going to really date me, but as a lad I saw the stage show with Robert Goullet in the "Valley Music Hall Theater" just outside Salt Lake City

Theater in the round - operated 1965 to about 1970. Co-founded by Art Linkletter. Now it belongs to the LDS Church and is their Bountiful Utah Regional Center (whatever that is).

I saw Oklahoma there. This while I was in late junior or early senior highschool. A couple of my classmates were in that production

So Brice, did you grow up outside of Utah? Junior or senior highschool productions of Brigadoon pretty much de rigueur.
