I'm with Chas here, if someone finds an older thread that was locked (due to it being older) and felt that they had a relevant comment or question that really belonged on that thread, they could PM one of the Moderators to say "Could you unlock this thread?" and provide a link.
It would take a little bit of effort on the part of the would-be poster, but it would insure that these older threads would be resurrected for meaningful reasons.

I agree with the powers that be here.. i have seen many times in the last year a new post on a thread that was 2 or more years old... the orignal thread starter has departed XTMS, and the present users do not have any info on the topic. the info will still be there. You can still search it, just not post on it.

I nominate Rex , but if he doesn't post something today, I'll see what I can do tonight, we need to include Kent's method of searching the forum with Google.
Best regards,
Jake

I agree with the thread lock idea, and actually had brought this up several months ago, much to the ire of several posters who responded to my suggestion. Old threads should be available as references, but if the topic warrants new discussion a new similar thread can be opened and the old thread referenced, even quoted, in the new. OR, as others have mentioned, the mods may be appealed to to unlock an old thread for good reasons.
By the way, I love Robert's "thread from the dead" tombstone.

I was always opposed to locking threads for reasons that all threads are new to the newest member. The last time we met, Chas and I discussed this at length and he convinced me otherwise.
I'm now in agreement that reviving old threads can stir up forgotten or irrelevant controversy and it's better to have a rule for all threads than an after the fact rule for some threads. Six months from the last post seems OK. Regular posters usually visit the site more frequently than that and if the thread is still attracting on topic posts then it won't be locked. Just please don't start deleting old, closed threads that may have an archive of good ideas or pictures.

The locking or Closing of old threads is simply that, Closing it.
All the threads are still there.
You can still search through them.
You can still read them.
You can still link to them.
The only thing that you can't do is make an additional post to an old thread.
All we tried to do with this was prevent the old dead threads from rising when a new member is reading or searching for information.
It is not uncommon for a new member to start reading and find some old thread and have something they think they want to add to it without realizing that the circumstances today may be different. The original poster may not be active anymore, the problem may have been resolved, the question answered or no longer relevant etc.

I'll have you know I can sustain anger and indignation for as long as I think it is necessary.
Just kidding as I agree with the six month decision.
