I agree with MacMillan, I feel that with a doublet a more formal shoe looks best, with the PC ghillie brouges or wingtips look fine.

I think evening dress requires evening shoes, either the buckle and strap shoe, or a pump of some sort, buckled or not. You could wear brogues if they are thin soled and more "streamlined" in shape, instead of heavy clodhoppers with running boards.
IMHO.

Yes I agree. I might add that almost anything, even "clodhoppers", are better than those dreadful ghillie things.

With day wear I usually wear my Dr. Marten brogues which in the catalog is surprisingly called the "Saxon" model.
