    I doubt that very much of your taxes go to pay for it; as a former civil servant (US National Park Ranger) who worked at a historical/genealogical site, that we're pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to funding -- that seems to be pretty much universal.

    Whenever a visitor would make a comment such as this one, I would sometimes say:

    Yes, your taxes do pay my salary, but so do mine. So at least you're making a profit of sorts -- I'm working for a vicious cycle.

    And btw, there are a number of free genealogical web sites (at least here in the states). As a former genealogical librarian, I can attest to that. Also, try your public library and see if they have a genealogical department that subscribes to pay ones.

    I used to be a fish biologist. While on the way to work one morning, I saw a marquee hiring night manager for a video store, the pay was $7,000 more than what I made. We have a running joke that we are the 53 lowest paid state in the union.
