    Some progress

One cuff done (1.5 cable repeat) and the second is cast on and in the works. This is two cable widths, separated by a 2-stitch row of plain knitting -- same thing on other side.

One thing I hadn't anticipated is the little "lettuce edge" or ruffle around the bottom of the cuff. I suppose one could cast on fewer stitches then increase until you had enough to work the cable, but I'm not going there.

I've also figured out a fallback point -- when I get the garter ribbing done, I'll thread a line of contrasting-color yarn through that row. Then, if I just can't get the leg to work up the way I want it, I'll back off, bind off at the bottom of the garter, and call them cuffs!

The scary thing is that I'm beginning to learn the pattern. . . not sure I'll have all 16 rows memorized by the time I'm done, but it could happen!

If you are going to establish the cable on the outside of the leg before you do any decreasing then I suspect that you will be able to see how the different parts of the knitting match up - shuffle the stitches on the needles to find the centre back.

You might have to use five needles so you can see where the centres should be, or knit the cable side on a circular needle, but the knitting itself should show you where the centre back is.

Got a good chunk of work done this week, between the 5-hour train ride to Ventura Games and some free time at home. One is down to where the decreases begin and the other is within just a few rows of same. Here are outside and inside views. I'm facing some intense "real" work schedules between now and our early November vacation, so this may be the last you see for some time. Enjoy!

My new line: These hose started out white, but I have sweated so much blood over them. . . LOL

It's not your pattern, Joan. I'm referring to the pattern for the cable itself, which I purchased from another designer (see link in OP).
