The vest is from J. Crew. I found it for about $30 at an outlet recently. Do a quick search for "inexpensive waistcoat" or my posts and you'll see a link to some cheap vests from J.C. Penney. Others have mentioned low cost vests from Target. I agree that the waistcoat adds quite a bit of class to an outfit. I've been thinking about getting a brown day sporran, but since I'm not wearing the kilt out and about much yet (and since it's a UK it has pockets) I haven't gone for it yet.
And, since you asked, I'm a science teacher. I teach some of the youngest students at our school. I've got a great gig, I get to hang out all day tricking kids into learning about science.

A year ago, I had none, save one double-breasted knit one that is decades old. Now I have at least six. Sometimes I mix them with my suits, or wear them with jeans if the mood strikes. With increasing frequency, I'm them with loosely tied ties as a casual look. Trying to step up my game, both in and out of kilts, I suppose.

.....and rightly so, in my 'umble opinion. Utilikilts, especially those with cargo pockets, do not need a sporran and, I think, look dreadful when one IS worn. I know your Utilikilt does not have cargo pockets, but I still think a sporran would not look right with it.

I do like the way you are heading but you might need to be aware of the mix: rather formal (well, at least 'semi') above the waist, but really casual below it! I have 12 Utilikilts but can never think of them as anything other than casual wear - mainly because of the creasing and the texture of the fabrics.

Now we await hearing about your kilted adventures.

 Take care,
 Ham.

Lord Hamish, the Utilikilt Mocker is a "kilted" version of the Dockers semi dress trouser. A shirt, tie, and jumper or waistcoat is appropriate on this side of the salt puddle. It would not go down well in the U.K. IMHO, as gents tend to be more smartly dressed there.
