Lord Hamish, the Utilikilt Mocker is a "kilted" version of the Dockers semi dress trouser. A shirt, tie, and jumper or waistcoat is appropriate on this side of the salt puddle. It would not go down well in the U.K. IMHO, as gents tend to be more smartly dressed there.

I'm on the same side of the pond as you, and I agree with Hamish. I think the look is too mixed. The shirt, tie, and waistcoat are fabulous, but to my eye almost demand a less casual look from the waist down. I'm thinking a wool kilt and a nice day sporran would be perfect.

Though Utilikilts may claim that their "Mocker" is the equivalent of dress trousers, that doesn't necessarily make it so. To my eye -- and Hamish's, as well, it would seem -- it presents a more casual look than dress slacks.

To be honest this was the first time dressing up the mocker this much. Usually I simply wear a t-shirt, polo or big wool sweater with it. I'll have to try again, perhaps with just a button-down shirt.
I'm heading up to Vermont for a weekend of brewery tours next month and plan on making that my first full day kilted out and about. Hopefully I'll be able to change my "beer is good" tee for a nicer shirt when we head to dinner at the end of the day.
I think that without the cargo pockets, this model of Utilikilt might not look amiss with a simple day sporran. And considering how deep its pockets are and how very low anything placed in them falls, the sporran might bring a nice bit of function along with its form...

Spanish teacher here. I guess I don't have to do much tricking since they sign up for my class willingly (it is an elective).

I said "trick" in jest. Since my students are so young there's no homework or tests, just lots of hands-on experiments and investigations. Most days I feel like my class is a mix of Bill Nye the Science Guy and Monty Python.

I think it looks good, but I've become a bit of a stick in the mud about contemporary kilts and I tend to agree with Matt and Hamish about the "casual" factor from the waist down. That will certainly be less of an issue with the MacPherson Hunting you have coming; paired with a nice day sporran it will be excellent!

If you took off the kilt and donned a pair of jeans, no one would think twice about the combination of dress and casual. At least not in the US.

But then, the combo in Scottish attire may be a little just too . . . whatever.

I would prefer the tartan kilt with the waistcoat, too. It's not what I would wear, but I'm not completely grossed out either. I am too traditional to wear a Utilikilt at all, but many folks do, and yours doesn't look bad.

You have taken your first step into a larger world.

Don't be dissuaded by the humble suggestions presented here. While opinions appear to be split on a waistcoat with a U.K., it does not mean you have to bounce back across the spectrum to printed t-shirts. A button down shirt (with or without a tie) will still work very well!

Experiment, experiment, experiment!

Occasionaly. At my school we have what I call Casual Kilted Friday. We do that once a month (although I missed september). I am the only one that does it though. I have found that once a month is all that I can get my principal to agree to. That is ok with me though. It can be a distraction when teaching teenagers.
