Is this OK, or should the bottom front points of a properly fitting waistcoat be just a tad above my sporran?
I think it looks fine.
Also, the pockets seem to be sewn shut. What's up with that? At first I thought they were just fake pockets. But I seem to be able to feel a pocket liner inside it (between the outer fabric and inner lining of the waistcoat). So it almost seems like there's a real pocket there that's just stitched closed. You other guys that have a Merona vest from Target, can you tell me if these are actually pockets before I cut the stitching out?
They're sewn shut to prevent people from smuggling things out of the factory, is my guess. I'd try cutting one open and see if it's a real pocket or not.

If you wear a bow-tie then you don't have to worry about length.

They're actually tacked shut to prevent them from warping during steaming and shipping. Open them very carefully if you intend to use them. If not, leave the tacks in. Waistcoat pockets are mostly decorative these days anyway, but any proud tailor will make them functional.

I had the pocket issue with trousers. I told my wife, "These pants are all ****** up! I need to return them, the pockets are defective." She took one look and laughed. I still hear about the "defective" pockets at least once a month. My wife, the seamstress, informed me that the pockets are sewn shut to keep them from wrinkling in transit. This is (according to her) a common practice, similar to the basting stitches on the pleats of the kilt.

If it's so common for the clothing that everybody wears, you'd think the manufacturers would let people know this. Like, I dunno, maybe put a tag on there saying that the pockets are stitched closed for shipping and may be opened by the customer. It's amazing to me that something this simple and common continues to be a mystery to the average consumer. Lack of communication is the root of the problem.

Do you suppose some poor chap is out there wearing a kilt with the pleats still tacked down?

I saw that guy at Celtic Fest here in Chicago a few years ago. I couldn't figure out if he was simply clueless or if he intended to return the kilt after the event claiming that he didn't actually wear it.

I've seen more than one person do that. I usually ask if they realize they're supposed to remove the basting stitches...
