Went to a whisky tasting last night. My new favorite is Lagavulin The Distillers Edition, distilled 1991, bottled 2007; though the Laproaigh Quarter Cask is still number two on my list.

The Glenfarclas 105°, Edradour 10, and one of the Rosebanks have made my top 10.

To all those DC/MD/VA folks who didn't make it, I am sorry. There were only four guests. We got to pick from Bart's private stock.

Being in Oman, an Arabian Gulf country which neighbours Saudi Arabia, I am lucky to be able to partake of alcohol at all ! My various bottles have been building up slowly, including types of spirit suitable for cocktails etc. There are alcohol retail shops here, but they’re disguised with blacked-out windows, so locals won’t be either shocked or tempted (the second is more likely). Expats can go to the police and get a permit “ration” book, which has a monthly buying value in ratio to salary. My malts are yet but a few but slowly and surely I add to them from the retail shops (whose range is limited of course) and duty frees on rare occasions when I’m passing through Bahrain or Dubai.

From memory I have (I forgot the years !):- Glenkinchie, Glenfarclas, The Singleton, Highland Park, Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Isle of Jura, Laphraoig, Smokehead, Ardbeg, Bowmore, Glengoyne and I think one other whose name I’ve forgotten for the moment. I did have a bottle of Talisker but it mysteriously disappeared when we moved house last month. I know for a fact when Indian workmen (A/C maintenance etc) are in the house, they always eye up my bottles and one or two haven’t been shy to ask for a bottle to keep after they’re finished their work ! On this occasion, Indian removal men packed everything and when all was unpacked, my Talisker was gone. Surprise surprise ! What a waste of a good malt ! Couldn’t prove it though, no evidence.

I would like to get my hands on a bottle of a Campbeltown malt, especially Springbank. (I would also like to get my hands on the throat of the guy who nicked my Talisker !)

I started with Aberlour 14, loved it and haven't found anything to displace it for the rare occasions I have a bit. It's quite affordable, hereabouts. However, I was given a bottle of Aberlour a'bunadh about a year and a half ago and I must admit that is *very* nice.

I recently tasted a couple distillings and in-house, in-year blends from our local Saint Georges distillery and quite liked last years #6, so I bought one of the few remaining bottles.

I have a bottle of Lismore as well, in the cupboard, and a bottle of Highland Park 12, but I'm afraid that I'm sold on Aberlour.

One of these days I'd like a bottle of Glendronach, for personal reasons which have nothing to do with the actual whisky....though I'll certainly drink it.

I've just checked - I also have a bottle of the Dalmore and also MacAllan. I have completely forgotten how old and what "specialities" they may have.

In the “spirit” (excuse pun !) of cross-Atlantic admiration, I also have a bottle of Jack Daniels Silver label, Bookers, Maker’s Mark and Knob Creek . I've not tasted them yet. Are they good ?

I'm with you on the beer and ale! intB)

I've found Glenmorangie Burgundy cask is real smooth. It's offered in some other finishes, too; and as someone above said, the original is very good.

I find it hard to name a single favorite. My top choice among the smokier tipples is (for now) Laphroig Quarter Cask. However, I'm also very fond of Balvenie Single Barrel.
I was "window shopping" the Scotch aisle in a local liquor store yesterday. Saw that they now carry Yamazaki. I didn't notice the word "Scotch" on the label, they list it as a single malt liquor. At the risk of sounding heretical, I may pick up a bottle to try. Might even be good for brownie points at home, being that my bride's name is Sumiko

My favorite is Talisker from the Isle of Skye. Just smelling the smokey aroma is almost as pleasurable as sipping it.
