I like this myself:

With a solid color kilt perhaps?

Wear this and the crowd won't see you, which defeats the power of the kilt.

How about this one for Santas Kona, Wally and Joly?

and this one for some of "us chaps across the Pond", as Jock says:

I agree with skauwt. I feel like I should be sitting in the jockey club in Bay Meadows or Hollywood Park watching those different waistcoats flashing by as they head for the finish line.

And if kilted would the jockeys be riding side-saddle? I'd agree that the Saltire waistcoat does indeed look more as a jockey shirt than a flag waistcoat.

this might sound odd ........but........... i know its illegal to burn or cut a stars and stripe flag ,so what happens when a tailor starts snipping away to make a waistcoat/vest
in some aspect aren't they breaking the law (sorry for the random thought its just something that crossed my mind)

It's actually not illegal to burn a flag, US, UK, Canadian. In fact this is the proper way to dispose of a worn and faded flag. Just do it with respect. None of these waistcoats are made from an actual flag only a semi-reasonable facsimile. That is probably why the Union Jack one is incorrect.

UNITED STATES CODE
TITLE 36
CHAPTER 10
§176. Respect for flag
No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.
