looks like there are a number of people I could hang out with here . . .
Laphroaig, Lagavulin for the peat . . .
Balvenie and Glenmorangie (madeira wood) for general sipping (or sharing with those who are not generally scotch drinkers).
right now, Lagavulin 16 is my fav.

What's the roughest Scotch whisky you've ever had ? It can either be malt, grain or blended (Must be made in Scotland)

I don't know if it's the "roughest", but the most unpleasant Scotch I've had was Clan MacGregor. It must be the "Mad Dog 20/20" of Scotch. As one internet pundit put it, "I'd love to describe the bouquet and taste, but it had no distinguishable characteristics other than a slight burning sensation as it went down."
For the moment, if I'm going to drink an "affordable" Scotch, I'll stick with Speyburn 10 or maybe Glenfiddich 12 or something else in that price range. I wish I could say I had tried the upper-echelon labels, but alas, I haven't won the lottery yet.

Add to the horrid list: "Inver House", sold in large green plastic bottles...!

Sheep Dip... It was gawd ahhhfull... We had it at our clan Hogmany party last year. Doc bought it as a joke... This year, we had a bottle of genuine Tennesee moonshine- aged less than 30 days, the label boasted... That was pretty terrible too.
But to answer the original post... I personally love Highland Park 18- great stuff! It is followed very closely by Ardbeg and Craganmor. (I don't know how to spell it... Sue me! )
