There is a HUGE difference in Aboyne Dress and the photo posted in this thread. Just take a look for yourself.
Which photo? The first photo is quite ren faire-ish, but the one posted by Squeaky is almost dead-on to the Aboyne. Take the stuffing out of the sleeves and you'd definitely would see that at a highland games.
Because the Aboyne Dress has "official" status as the dress worn by women engaged in the national dances of Scotland in competitions does not make it the "national garb" for women
I never said it was the national garb for women, but it's the closest thing you'll ever get and to deride it as Jock did is doing a disservice to the Scottish committee that tried to reach to some sort of past connection to have the women garbed in something that wasn't the kilt. And, also, the garment was to be worn by ANY woman who wanted to wear it, not just for dancers.

Surely the Aboyne Dress was intended for female dancers, no? I'll have to join Jock Scot, too, and "deride it"! Do you really think that a committee can sit down and come up with a "national garb"? Wouldn't the people claim for themselves their national garb, rather then have it laid out by a committee?
It's rather odd, don't you think, that if this Aboyne Dress is the "national garb", why isn't it worn by women in Scotland? I mean by LOTS of women in Scotland. You don't see any members of the Royal Family, or chiefs, or wives of chiefs wearing it, do you? Maybe it isn't worn because it is a costume.

I NEVER said it was the national garb. The committee reached into past elements of ladies garb to invent the Aboyne. All I said was that it's about as close as Scotland will ever get to a ladies national garb. And of course it's a costume! I do believe I said that any lady wearing it would be assumed to be a performer of some sort....
