What Price Glory is discontinuing the Cameron Highlanders (79th Foot)

I must say that I ordered a Cameron Highlanders kilt from What Price Glory a couple years ago and sent it right back and got a refund.

What's so strange is that on paper it sounds right: heavy wool, military binding and buckles, etc.

But when the kilt came and I put it on it seemed all wrong:
-the cloth didn't have the look or feel of Scottish-made kilt tartan of any weight, having a strange loose weave, and not hanging like a "real" kilt
-the shape and fit were odd

So to my eye not only did it not look or feel like an MOD kilt, it didn't look or feel like a Scottish kilt of any sort. I've owned a couple ex-MOD kilts, one from the 1920's, and I've handled and seen a large number of old military kilts, and the WPG kilt was not like them.

So... to get a kilt that really looks and feels like an Army kilt you'll have to go with real Scottish-made tartan cloth and a legitimate kiltmaker, in my opinion. You can get the heavy MOD weight tartan- I've seen it in tartan sample books.

I just got one from Jerry this past Nov. he told me then that they would be discontinuing them. My kilt is a 36x24 and its too big,
The stock he is working from is from a run he did 8 years ago. They just didnt sell well at all.

So, does anyone know where to get some decent 22oz. Cameron of Erracht by the yard? I haven't seen any advertised among the weavers I've researched... I suppose I could just enlist in the Canadian Forces' Cameron Highlanders [of Ottawa] Reserve regiment; but, even then, I don't think the rank & file get issued kilts anymore

I think the material I've seen in a tartan sample book, from one of the leading mills (I can't remember which), is the actual tartan used for MOD kilts. I believe it was listed at 18oz but I could be wrong.

It looks very different from civilian tartan, having a hazy indistinct look more like a wool blanket. I believe that the blanket-looking very heavy stuff is only used for Other Ranks' kilts, and that Officers etc use a tartan that looks like the normal 16oz civilian stuff.

I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find the mill that makes that heavy OR's tartan for the MOD.

House of Edgar has a line of 18 ounce tartans in the military setts. See your favorite retailer, e.g. Scottish Tartans Museum (last section on that page--click "Check Availability List " for the TartanWeb search function).

Yes just today I was at my local retailer (RP Blandford & Son) and looked at the sample books and found the House of Edgar military stuff... it was just as I remembered, looking and feeling more like blanket cloth than kilt tartan. It comes in all the normal Scottish regimental tartans.
