It's not necessarily showing disrespect if someone wears something informal. I never saw Dad wearing a suit, so I wouldn't have dreamt of wearing a suit to his funeral. I wore casual type trousers, a patterned button-up shirt and a fawn coloured wool jersey.

I personally have never worn a kilt to a funeral.
I have worn a dark navy or black suit with a white shirt and a tartan tie.

Sweet,
You're rug is a beauty anyway, hang on to that one. I'm now sure that it is the same one my grandparents have/had (I'm pretty sure my aunt and uncle have it now, but haven't been to their house in years). It is good to know that there are other ones out there, because that means there is a chance that I could come across another one some day and buy it.
Thanks Glen

I have worn a kilt to 3 funerals now. The first was my dad who also died of cancer in 2001. My Mom wanted my brother and I to wear one as she and my dad had been getting into our heritage. We rented our kilts and wore "flower of ireland" or something like that. The next was for my grandfather in 03 again at the behest of my mother. I don't remember the tartan or the jacket that I wore. This past wednesday I wore my kilt (purchased last year for my mom's wedding) to my grandfather's sister's funeral. My Aunt was the last of twelve and while not necessarily into the heritage thing, my family is very light hearted and my Aunt was the ring leader of many a pratical joke. I felt it only fitting to wear our tartan to the last of the great 12. My Aunt did not have children and the services were organized by cousins. As I said my family is very light hearted and shared jokes at my expense.
Unfortunately I do not have a proper jacket and had to wear my Argyll jacket. My family not knowing better however didn't take notice.
My condolences to you and your friend.

Kilted Fireman
I would say there is nothing wrong with wearing an Argyll jacket to a funeral, you have my deepest condolences on your loss.

I wore my Black Watch to my mothers burial. After the graveside activities we went to the fooder (eating food), my entire family finally saw me in kilt. It had been rumored about for a while before then that I had taken up kilting. The only substantial comment I heard, among the few others, came from my cousin who I hold in the highest regard possible. She said,"I love it."
That, to me is as good as ordination!int:
Go, have fun, don't work at, make it fun! Kilt them, for they know not, what they wear. Where am I now?
