Yes, I believe you are correct. If you look closely at the photo it appears that the pleats are narrow and alternate, this is most obvious by looking at the lower part of the pleats.

most excellent. Thanks. Based on total number of Salmon, I expect Young Argyll outranks him. What a great jacket- no fancy cuffs, no trim, nothing except that one fish and the tails in the back. And, of course, the waistcoat.

I don't think it is a question at all of the Duke of Argyll "outranking" him. Sir Lachlan could have a hundred salmon buttons if he wanted to!

And, BTW, "Young Argyll" would be the Duke's son and heir, the Marquis of Lorne, for "Young" means the eldest son.

I thought of having salmon buttons made for a doublet but figured I'd be stepping on Duart's and Argyll's toes if we showed up at the Oban Ball together!
My coat of arms bears three salmon, compared to MacLean of Duart who bears only one, and the Duke of Argyll who has none! Of course in his case salmon is one of his badges and they are best seen on his standard, which bears a semee of salmon naiant Argent...six in number!

At 41, the present duke is a young man. I recognize that the even younger Marquis is technically the young one. Having crossed the bar of 50, I was referring to his age relative to my own- that and his beautiful red velvet doublet, which seems to have at least 20 salmon showing. But doesn't he take precedence over a Baronet? Do you know their ranks in the Company of Archers?
Being sine nobilitate, I can't claim any fish blazons, ( the MacLowlife arms feature a dubious future surmounted on a checky past ) but I'd go halves with you on a few dozen buttons...
