I wasn't a huge fan of the second one from the pictures of the swatches. However after seeing Matt's pictures I have changed my mind. I like the first one, but agree it would have to be suited to one's coloring. The second one doesn't look nearly as busy in Matt's picture. Both are good chooses in my opinion. I would say it comes down to if the first on suits your coloring or not. If it does, go with it. If not, go with the second one.

Well... First, I ordered a Muted Red vest to match many of my kilts with red in them.

After I put the vest up next to the swatch of the Glen Inver tweed from HOE (the TOP one in the survey), I couldn't resist.

I pulled the trigger on 8 yards of material for my kilt and a few more for a matching Braemar jacket. I was PLEASANTLY surprised to find that the material had been woven with a kilting selvedge, as I was told it would have to be hemmed.

The KILT I decided to do a little different. I made an 8 yard kilt (complete with linings and everything) in Reverse Kingussie pleating style 'just to see if I liked it' done that way. I ran into a few 'challenges' along the way and am pleased with the outcome, but don't think I'd do it again as there aren't any obvious advantages to making a kilt that way (to me) vs. a traditional knife pleat. We'll see if I change my mind after wearing it a few times.

Anyway... the finished 'look' was DEFINITELY inspired by Matt Newsome's pictures. Matt, I really like the tweed outfits you've put together, so I wanted to see if I could do one for myself.

The sporran is one that we have Donnie make specifically for our store. I think it goes very nicely with the outfit.

Here's a shot of me in my brand new Glen Inver 'tweed' kilt suit this morning in a snow squal we're having:

Purely a personal thing, but I think if it were me, I would loose those flashes. But then again, it is not me.

I'm not sure how I feel about the flashes... I don't have a muted red pair to match the vest, but was thinking about getting a pair of garter ties from Matt Newsome.

What are your thoughts on the rest of the outfit, Jock? I know you're a bit more 'traditional leaning'... (and don't comment on my left sleeve... I was only outside for 30 seconds for the picture and didn't have time to straighten myself out completely... it actually IS the proper length, it just doesn't look like it. )

    Rocky, that looks really sharp!

How wonderful that you got the cloth with a kilting selvedage. Whenever I've ordered any cloth from that particular line it had to be hemmed. Maybe they are changing their practice? Hope so.

In any case, the outfit looks great, and those colors look very nice on you. Hard to beat a good kilt suit!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of matching flashes myself, but to each his own... I think red garters to match the vest, or a muted yellow to match the kilt would look nice. I think the green hose look very nice with that outfit.

I wonder what color tie might work.....

I was going to break out a Bottle Green tie (to match the hose and bottle green in the tweed), but didn't want to get THAT dressed up today. My other concern was it might look a little too 'christmassy' with the green and red on top of each other. I'm not sure.

Matt... do you have dark red (i.e. MUTED color) in the garter ties?

BTW, Matt... thank you for giving me the 'seal of approval' on the outfit. It was inspired by your pics.

And yes, I was told by Michelle (HOE) that it was going to have to be hemmed, but the cloth came with a tuck selvedge. It's not 100% PERFECT like the single width cloth from HOE, but it's far better than most.

    Rocky,

I LOVE the look. I was not here when the thread started. I began with the first page, voted...noticed the date and when straight to the end. My first thought was no......do a jacket, not a waist coat. Great choice. I love the look. I want one for myself. Sporran is perfect. As you mentioned, I would go with red garter ties.

Where are pic's of the pleats?

With those hose and vest I would either go with a green tie to match the hose or Black

Er, well, since you asked! I think you would be better with no flashes at all with that particular outfit. I love tweed, but not that tweed and I am not a fan of tweed kilts in general and tweed kilt suits in particular. In passing, a matching tweed waist coat would look better. I am afraid that the style of cuff is not for me either. I have a feeling that the tweed is rather lightweight and rather soft, which even if is not, it looks as though it is! Sorry, but you did ask!
