    Quest for my Favourite Lager

When I was a wee lad on my first trip to scotland (16ish yrs old), I discovered the great lagers/ales of Scotland. One that stood out was Tennents Lager. This is my Fav. beer of All Time. When I came of age back home I rediscovered this lager in a local pub. It was just a few months later that they quit carrying this beer. I soon discovered that the distributor quit carrying it. How frustrating! Fast forward a few more years, I took a trip to Branson, MO and found a local pub that carried it. I took advantage of my find and ordered as much as I could. I Returned some months later to discover that They quit carring Tennents. I called around and found a Liquor Store that carried it. I rushed up there opened up the fridge and there it was, a 6 pack of Tennents Lager. I asked the owner if he had any more, he said that this was his last one till a new shipment arrives. It was a bit of a tease to have just one 6 pack, but I was happy. luckily I have a mother in law that lives nearby. I finally had a source for my Tennents. Yesterday my Mother in law calls to tell me she is going to Branson and will pick up some Tennents for me. Yeah . It was 20min later she calls and tells me that the distributor there quit carrying it! . They did not have any. I am beginning to think that this is a conspiracy. My quest for the elusive Tennents Lager continues.

    I feel your pain, mate.

I live in Springfield, and the Brown Derby International Wine Center used to carry Tennents and my other favourite summertime Lager, Tiger from Singapore. Yes, they are mass-produced "swill" beer, but they are both great in the heat of a SW Missouri Summer, and I picked up a Tiger after reading it was the drink of choice for British squaddies in the Mayalan Emergency -- que my wife's eye-rolls!

In the case of the Wine Center, the beer manager, who is a fan of American Pale Ales, purges the inventory based on his personal likes and dislikes -- or so I've been told. It doesn't help the fact that Missouri has some odd laws regarding spirits.

But, if you're willing to drive to St. Louis, I did find Tennents at a Shnucks Grocery Store on Lindberg, just across the street from the Frontenac Hilton. I have one bottle left that will be consumed on a special occasion! int:

You might also try a store in Fayetteville -- I'll have to ask a buddy of mine its name -- that carries quite a few import and speciality beers.

BTW, a great story about Tennents, as told to me by a piper in the Perth, Western Australia Pipe Band: Every year the band traveled north to Jakarta for the annual Highland Games -- one year, the organisers invited the Black Watch to attend, and spared no expense to have McEwan's Export flown in to Java for their guests. As it turns out, the Jocks were Tennents drinkers, and so the Aussies got all of the McEwan's free!

Let me know what you find out. Until then, you're not alone.

    T.

Thats Funny, My mom in law checked Brown Derby. A clerk said that they used to carry it, but the distributor quit carrying it. What makes no sense to me is that it seems to be a popular beer, all the liquor stores sell it quickly, so why not Supply it? I know that it is imported by Import Brands in St. Louis. Next time I go to St Louis, I will have to search for it. The Wine Company in Branson was who carried Tennents for a bit. I must say, they have a good selection of imports.

Exactly. Isn't the whole point of capitalism that "the customer is always right"?

I get so tired of being dictated to in terms of what brands I prefer, including beer. APAs really don't do much for me; I'm more of a malt person that overly hoppy beers.

Just called them...they no longer carry it. Distributor dropped it for whatever reason. And, since we only have one distributor in the whole state, you know what that means, No Tennents anywhere

When I left Germany the first time, the other Frank jammed a half litre bottle of beer in my hand and said, this is for the road. I stuck it in my suitcase and forgot about it for the rest of the trip. When we ghot home, I cooled it, and drank it . Then I spent hours on the internet trying to find more. We found a restaurant fairly close, that had it on tap. Well, we ate and I had a few. On the way home, I stopped at every staore I thought might have it. No Luck. We got all the way home and found it in the closest liquor store to my house. They ordered me a case. Kostritzer. A black lager from the north of germany. Good beer. BTW......I was kilted in the German restaurant. Boy, did that drive a lot of people nuts.

When I went to Scotland for the first time in 2003, I saw Tennant's on tap in EVERY pub I went into. I was hoping to find St. Andrews also on tap, but it was always offered in a botle from a little pub fridge behind the bar. Tennant's has been offered on tap in a couple of pubs in Houston. Kelvin Arms is one of them, but their webby has been reduced to a single page without info on brews offered like it used to do.

I was in the exact same boat as you, but now since I moved to Saratoga Springs, NY, there is a beverage center that sells it. It is right down the road from me. It is great to have a supplier so close and Tennants may be my favorite lager.

Swill beer? Who says that? Maybe it is mass produced but it has a heck of a lot more substance and flavor than most of the American big brews.
