Personally, I love solid colors! They lend themselves well to tartan accessories.

Solid color kilts offer the option of putting the tartan or pattern on top.

I agree that solid colours do well with something patterned on top for added visual interest. I have a few small sett, fashion plaid shirts that wouldn't look very good with a tartan kilt but might just look smashing with my green shadow tartan kilt... I've also got a couple Argylle sweaters that I'm going to have to try!
