Robert Mackie makes them both ways. You specify which type you want if you are ordering directly from them. I believe it is purely a matter of personal taste. I like them tied.

Thanks David. I have taken a look at the photos, thanks for sending them to me. I was just about to PM you, when you commented on this thread. The size 56 will be too small. I am a size 58. I apologize about that, but thank you so much for everything you have done! Much appreciated indeed my friend!

I guess I should've just created a poll-"tied or untied" for the diced, fawn Balmoral! LOL!

The ones with the sewn together hanging ribbons don't have this notch in the back, so if you order one that has a pre-tied bow and want to untie it so the ribbons are left hanging, you may need a smaller size, since the V shaped notch creates a gap, which may make for a loose fit if not sized properly.
Awesome! Thanks for the information.

Or if you have one with the V notch & want to wear it untied, you can also take a needle & thread to it & close the gap
I had an old "Rogers Rangers" bonnet that didn't have much in the way of ribbons (what it did have didn't stay tied very well) & I solved the problem with the needle & thread method.
Just for the record, I tie mine

Thanks mate. I've just ordered a new diced, fawn balmoral, from Robert Mackie, with the ribbons tied.

Liking the light colored Bonnets
I recently purchased a Mackie bonnet and then purchased a pattern to knit and then felt my own. I am curious how to felt the crown and then knit the dicing as I have recently seen. Very interesting. I wish I had known I had the option of having the back prepared for tying as mine came sewn together.
I also am going to learn how to put a liner in. Do any of the rabble have a wife that is experienced in this?
TIA
