Hmm - I have four methods of sharpening them as well - a butcher's steel, a little crossed rods thing, interlocking discs, and a carborundum stone.

A blunt knife is dangerous - they are more likely to cut you than a sharp one as they require more force on them to do anything.

Perhaps a few trips to the shops might be in order - or even charity shops - Goodwill shops(?) I have found quite a few good knives for my kitchen for a few pence which only required sharpening - admittedly I have also found some which would not take an edge no matter how I tried - the edge just flaked off, but no great loss.

Anyway - good luck on retrieving your black knife from a life of bureaucracy and stationary.

Around our house I always hone a blade before I use it -- that way I know it's sharp and I don't have to worry about She of Clan Comyn lopping off a finger.

My mother, on the other hand, would hack and chop and hammer with a dull blade and say it was "fine." Then Dad would make a trip to the kitchen for a knife, discover one dull, and sharpen the lot. I learnt many swear words shortly after my dear mother had lined up a manly swing at a recalcitrant carrot, only to discover that the blade had cloven the offending vegetable and the end of her finger as well. She also had the habit of snipping parsnips into the pot, using the knife against her thumb. As a lad I had many a meal of pink parsnips...

My guess is it was in your 'I can't spell' box. I'm guessing you are talking about your sgian dhu (pronounced skean dew) meaning black dagger (black in colour and purpose).

I have to laugh when the corrector is incorrect. I think you will find it is in actual fact a sgian dubh.

On a side note my bagpipe tutor would always make the joke of a Gael and a Lowlander having great trouble because the Gael was looking for his Sgian dubh and the Lowlander was too pre-occupied with the fact that there was a dove that could ski.

get it Skiin' doo... ahh forget about it.
