At the time (the museum was established in 1988) he was president of the Scottish Tartans Society. I was hired by the museum in 1997 and got to meet him once on a visit to the US before he passed on in 1998. The STS is no longer an operational body, but happily the museum which they helped to found under Dr. Teall's leadership in Franklin is still going strong and promoting tartan on "this side of the pond." (BTW, that portrait was painted by famed kilt historian and retired kilt maker Bob Martin -- a man of many talents!) ill be sure to raise a wee glass for him on my next night out
