Kicked out of work for wearing kilt
So I wore my kilt in for Tartan Day today, as my boss had given me permission a couple weeks ago, all of my coworkers know I wear a kilt, and seem to be OK with it, until today......I walked in, clocked in, and 10 minutes later I get a tap on the shoulder, and turn around to find the shift manager standing there. He tells me "I have 3 words for you, asinine, idiotic, and unprofessional. This is not Jr. high, this is not show and tell, we are big boys here, and we are here to work, I dont care if it's Irish Day, I don't care if you are a transy, but when you come to work, you will wear this uniform, or you will be released. You have reflected badly on me, my judgment and position, you have embarrassed me and the other employees, and you have reflected badly on the professionalism of this job. If you have any sense of decency and maturity about you will be go home and change into proper attire."
Needless to say, I changed, rather than cause a huge problem.......was pretty disappointed though, the boss 2 levels above him said I could wear it, and yet he threatened to fire me right there........

WOW!!
I'd go to the honcho that gave you permission & let him know what happened, even if it comes to naught.

What kind of job do you work at that it's acceptable for your supervisor to be able to talk to you like that?

I'm missing something here. Did this guy know that his boss said you could wear the kilt, or am I misunderstanding the chain of command?
Perhaps you should go to his boss and appologize for attempting to wear the kilt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Given that you have a minimum wage job, I'd be checking out the local discrimination statutes. Not much of a reason to roll over if you've not much to lose. An employer in my city couldn't possibly act like that.
Question is, do you want to own a bookstore?

I suppose it is an issue between the boss and the super in that case. Might not want to get too directly entangled...

Hmmm...looks like he failed to learn anything about leadership in the Army. How did a moron like that last 20 years in an honorable profession? Of course, if he was really any good at what he did in the Army he might have a better job than supervising minimum wagers at a bookstore in his retirement. He shouldn't take his inadequacy out on you.
You really need to report his abusive behavior. If I berated one of my employees like that the manager and the owner would have my head and I'm even the guy who has handled the firings recently (the thing I hate most about my job!!).
