An outstanding portrait of a piper from the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in full regalia taken probably sometime in the late 1890's. The splendid uniform is matched by this soldiers almost regal bearing. The finery aside he is a veteran of active service this being born out by the single clasp campaign medal on his chest. This medal is
most likely a single clasped 1895 India General Service Medal.

A beautifully realized family portrait of a veteran sergeant of the 2nd Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and his wife & daughter.

The sergeant wears the ribbons of the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals. The 2nd Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders did not serve in South Africa so there is a good possibility that this man served with the 1st Battalion during the Boer War and transferred to the 2nd Battalion prior to its deployment to India in the early 1900's

An interesting image of the South African volunteer regiment - The Cape Town Highlanders. The unit saw action in Bechuanaland (1896-97) and during the Boer War. It also saw action in both World Wars. It is still in existence as a volunteer unit in the South African Defense Forces today.

Sergeant
48th Canadian Highlanders
c. 1900's

An unidentified sergeant of the 48th Canadian Highlanders. Members of the regiment's band founded the Kilties who performed highland and military music around the world including Soldiers of the Queen. Elements of the 48th also saw service in South Africa during the Boer War. The regiment still exists within the Canadian Army.

Miss Margaret Fraser in an as yet unidentified role. She is dressed in the uniform of a Highland Regiment and wears not only the Egypt Medal/Khedives Star pair but also a Victoria Cross.

1877-79 South Africa (Zulu War) Medal

Under close examination this young lady was revealed to be wearing the 1877-79 South Africa Medal - which is commonly referred to as the Zulu War Medal. The girl is identified on the reverse in pencil. Her first name is possibly "Frances" with her last name appearing to be "Gilbertlee".

However, I should be sorry for anyone to be led astray, if only for a moment, so I am writing to say that your "veteran sergeant of the 2nd Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders " on page 33 (April 2010)-

- looks to me very much like a sergeant of the Black Watch. The plain blue glengarry may have distracted your informant but the cap badge, kilt, sporran and spats all proclaim him to be a Royal Highlander.

"The sergeant wears the ribbons of the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals. The 2nd Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders did not serve in South Africa..."

but the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch, on the other hand, did, which should solve the mystery of the good sergeant's South African medals. 2nd Bn, BW performed stalwart service in SA, before sailing to India in 1902 to take up station at Umballa in the Punjab. They served in India till 1914.

I hope that's of use. It would have mattered to the man concerned.
