			jacket question....?

Hello all, 1st post here, just curious on everybody's opinions, and i just wanted to say this is a great forum.
Anyway, just curious...I'm currently in Afghanistan, there's a tailor here that does nice stuff for cheap. I'm wondering if it would be suitable to get an Argyle style jacket made, without the studs and the distinctive cuff. Does anybody see a problem with that, as long as the cut is alright and made for a kilt/sporran.

First of all, welcome from Inverness-shire. Secondly, go for it, the "Crail" style day jacket is about what,I think, you have in mind.

No problem at all. A contemporary jacket is very popular these days. Go for it.

Do you even need to get a jacket specifically made, or would it look funny with a normal suit jacket?

The length of a regular suit jacket would hang over the pleats obscuring them and inhibiting their natural motion. Plus it just looks sloppy.

And kilt-cut jackets have a cut away to make room for the sporran.

The proportions of a standard jacket are wrong for wearing with a kilt.
As a rule - from what I have seen, the lower edge of the jacket is either level with the cuff of the sleeve or a little shorter, presumably for men with longer than standard length arms.

I think that if there is more shaping - perhaps it can be more closely fitted than for a longer jacket, then the look is smarter.

Many members here have converted regular suit jackets to kilt jackets. Here's the main features:

The length of the jacket body should end an inch or so above where the sewn down parts of the pleats (the fell) ends; it could be a little shorter.

The back of the jacket will not have the single center vent, rather two side vents making a bit of a flap across the back of the jacket.

The front of the jacket will be curved into a cutaway to work with the sporran.

The pockets will need to be placed a bit higher to look right with the shorter length.

If there is a waistcoat, it may need to be shortened to work with the sporran.

 That's about it.

 Good luck.
