Notes:

The drums bear the insignia of the 173rd Battalion. The 173rd was recruited and mobilized in Hamilton, Ontario. In January 1917 the battalion was absorbed into the 2nd Reserve Battalion. A contemporary pen and ink message on the reverse reads, "This is a picture of our band in East Sandling, Kent, England. Col. Towers is next to me. Major Haddon on other side. 2nd Can. Res. Batt'ln 1917. To Major Chisholm with best wishes from A.T. Pollock, Pipe Major."

Pollock's signature on this card is an exact match for the signature of Archibald Thomas Pollock on his attestation when he enlisted in the 173rd in Hamilton on 3 February, 1916. His C.E.F. serial number was 690148. A carpenter by trade, he lived at 12 Keith St., Hamilton with his wife Mary. Pollock was a Presbyterian, born in Glasgow, Scotland. He stood 5"7 1/2" tall, had a sallow complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair. He is seated third from the left with his pipe major's chevrons clearly visible on his lower sleeve.
The 173rd Battalion is one of the units perpetuated by the present day regiment, The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's), in the Canadian Forces Army Reserve.

While many who heard them live contend that G. S. McLennan was the finest strathspey and reel player during the early years of the 20th century, John MacColl the best march player, and John MacDonald of Inverness the best piobaireachd player, many see Willie Ross as the best all-round player of the period. He was known for stirring music and a beautifully toned instrument in everything he played, and his prize-winning in the major events set records for both piobaireachd and light music.

With this competitive record, more than 50 years of continuous teaching throughout Scotland, five seminal books of music and many popular compositions to his credit, Willie Ross can certainly lay claim to having been the most influential piper of the century, including during the decades after his death...

"The guests were always welcomed at the church by Mr. Paul Migeon and the burgomaster of Adegem who had first put flowers on the graves of the Belgian soldiers and officers who had given their lives in Adegem during the 18 day campaign in 1940. Until 1963 the choir of the Notre Dame Church of Tielt took care of the solemn celebration of the Eucharist; from 1964 this duty was taken over by the choir of the deanery church of Saint Vincent. In 1962 the choir from Tielt surprised and moved the Canadians present with a Dutch version of the French-Canadian national anthem O Canada! which was followed by congratulations from the Canadians.


Every year before receiving the VIPs Paul Migeon and the burgomaster of Adegem put flowers on the graves of Belgian victims of the 18-day campaign. Two Canadian soldiers of the Queen's Own Rifles in typical mourning stature next to the court of honor of the fallen Belgians.


The guests arriving in the cemetery: burgomaster De Kesel, representing the king, colonel-pilot Remy, Canadian ambassador Sydney Pierce and Paul Migeon.
