ANZAC Day 25 April
Today in Australia and New Zealand is our National Memorial day, to remember our members of the Armed Forces who have paid the ultimate price in their service to our great Countries. We also give thanks to and remember all those who have served or are serving in the armed services.
Today commerates the 95th anniversary of the men of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp who landed at Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey during the Great War
In Australia the day is looked upon as the start of a process of creating an enduring identity that defines Australia and Australians to this day
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
LEST WE FORGET

Even though I cannot get to an Anzac Day service here in the USA, this Kiwi still takes time to remember those who fell there and I recite that poem:
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

As having a very dear mate who resides in Bargo that is a vet of the Royal New South Wales Regt, and always having a very deep respect for the Anzac forces; I've poured out a wee dram of Scotch to raise a toast in remembrance.
Cheers.

We here in the USA could learn a lot from our Aussie & Kiwi cousins on how to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. A mate of mine in Toowoomba back in the late '90s sent me a video of the Brisbane ANZAC Day parade and I was amazed at the turn-out, especially from the younger generations. It was particularly inspiring to see grandchildren marching with their grand-dad's mates in the various unit associations.
I will be sure to remember ANZAC Day today in silent prayer at Mass. And to our Aussie & Kiwi cousins, this Septic simply says: Good on ya.
Lest we forget.

These laid the world away; poured out the red
Sweet wine of youth; gave up the years to be
Of work and joy, and that unhoped serene,
That men call age; and those who would have been,
Their sons, they gave, their immortality.

I went to Gallipoli in 2003. There are of course many Scots, English, Irish, French and, of course Turkish soldiers who never left.
After the War Attaturk who was a Turkish Commander at Gallipoli said:
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives...you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us, where they lie, side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosum and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well."
I hope it was widely read by the mothers and wives and brought some little comfort.
We will remember!
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.
