On the one occasion when I was a guest at a royal garden party at Holyrood hosted by Prince Charles, neither Prince Charles nor Prince William wore kilts although most of the male guests were kilted.
I think Prince William is not typical of the younger generation, I see lots of young men wearing kilts nowadays, either formally for a special night out, or casually to spectate at rugby and soccer games.
