They are pretty common up here in surplus stores, even though they seem to ask a small ransom for them. I was issued all of mine and have had them re-soled 2x instead of turning them in for a pair of the new ones.

Trying for a "Hollywood" look with black tone-on-tone. I really think this would be great if I got one of those black tone-on-tone kilts I think a couple places make. What would really set it off (I think) would be a tie and matching flashes out of the same material. I also think a black waist coat instead of a PC would make it more modern. Going to have to collect the pieces for that.

Think that will work for making a modern formal look?

I think the sunglasses are what make your look awesome

For a more modern touch, I would skip the Ghillie brogues and just wear regular dress shoes. As for the PC... it might look more modern with black buttons, which wouldn't be too hard to switch. I don't think wearing just a vest instead of a jacket is particularly formal if you're going to a black tie event though it might work if "formal" just means "dress nicely," so it would depend on context. Having matching black tie and flashes would be a nice touch.

    Thanks.

Sorry about that. I keep forgetting waist coat here means vest. I keep thinking that a waist coat as a short coat such as the PC

I like the idea of the black buttons. My current PC is a cheapo that will be replaced in time. Now I think I'll keep it when it gets replace and do the button thing.

Yes, I get confused with terminology too!

I put a layer of black nail polish on the buttons of my Braemar jacket and it turned out quite well; muted but still looking nice. You might give it a try with your PC when the time comes.

As for the Hollywood formal look, here is Gerard Butler. Two-tone black and grey, PC + waistcoat (both with shiny buttons), and no tie:

Here is my attempt, including Drac-style sunglasses The kilt and flashes are dark green and it's my Spencer jacket again... not bad but I think I prefer a bit more contrast. You can barely tell I'm wearing a bow-tie, not just in this photo but even in real life!

    I like.

I want my tie to show more too so I am thinking of a full tie with a tone on tone pattern vs a black bow.

Here is an attempt at an urban combat -

I want to replace the sporran with something like this -

Maybe a desert kilt too? Color not camo. Wouldn't be urban than.

Wore this outfit to the Scottish festival today over in Arlington. While making the rounds of the clan tents on tent ask me some different questions besides "the" question. They were asking about how hot it was. When I responded it wasn't since it was PV not wool he asked if it breathed. I said yes but doesn't matter since there's a hole in the bottom. You should have seen the stunned looks I got.
