I consider both to be undergarments and don't wear them unless under other shirts.

In Australia the top photo is a Tshirt and the bottom photo is that of a singlet which is usually worn under other clothing except when they are blue and you work as a manual labourer, outside in the heat of summer. I believe the term singlet or undervest is used in the UK for the same item

Yes, it was JSFMACLJR's, and davidlpope's post 26, and thirty, that lead me to ponder whether we are all talking about the same thing.

I can asure you that some of the shirts I have been calling "T-shirts" would not work as an under garment, and are not intended to be worn as such.

I'll have to wait for comments on the pictures to understand...

    Ted,

Sorry for not being helpful. When I say "t-shirt", I'm really referring to a wide range of shirts that are made of a "jersey"-type material (as opposed to broadcloth) that are "crew-necked", usually with a ribbed band around the neck opening and do not have a button placket or any sort of "fold-down" collar. Some of these are plain white, some are colored, some of these have a print on the front or back, some even have pockets on the left breast.

    Thanks davidlpope.

Just to make sure I understand what you are saying, you consider all of those T-shirts to be undergarments including the ones that have the pocket etc?

    * Ok I reread your post with the pictures to see what you are saying and your answer. Thanks.

No. Just all the ones that I own. In general, though, I just find that t-shirts, even those designed to be worn as an outer shirt, are too casual to be worn when I leave the house.

I think most people in the UK would call it a vest, but would understand the term singlet. Singlet would normally be used when it is being worn for sports.

Come on X markers, the challenge is out there somebody should design a uniquely American style of jacket or other accessory for wear with a kilt. Whilst it should not offend traditional conventions it should be American enough that it is fairly obvious the wearer is American.
The 'Eathen in his idleness bows down to wood and stone,
'E don't obey no orders unless they is his own,
He keeps his side arms awful,
And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

How about a modified 'Ike' jacket? .

I'd prefer a nicer fabric (tweed or woolen suiting material) and toned down button though, with the brass buttons it looks like part of a policeman's uniform.

It's about as close to an uniquely "American-Style" as I could come up with. With it's short waist, it would ride similarly to a doublet.

As worn by Riverkilt with flatcap and boots, it has plenty of promise. Definitely not THCD but very sharp:

Don't forget that the Ike Jacket was based on the British Battledress Blouse.

Ah yes the "Ike" jacket, modelled on the British Battle Dress blouse I believe. No try again! LOL.
