C is a nice design and very attractive, but to me it looks like a bazillion other tartans....
I, too, like A and B best (more B than A maybe?) but, as Amble started with a design of mine, I feel a connection to C as well. I definitely appreciate ALL comments, pro and con, but there are times when I wish someone else had started this thread/discussion/project/whatever you want to call it. I find myself worrying about it a lot and I sometimes think I should have had an another choice or two in the poll.

Believe me, if we can come up with a better alternative I'm not going to mind. My goal is mainly for us to end up with a tartan for New Yorkers that we can be pleased to wear. If someone else designs it or makes it happen it will only make me happy.

OK, now I'm going to beat my head against a wall a few more times

    Regards,

    Brian

I did not mean for my post to be discouraging, just one man's (not even a resident, just a drifter) opinion. Dont stress about this. NYS hasnt had a tartan this long, why rush things. Take your time, explore your options, and do what will make you and the majority of the residents of the great state happy!

Don't worry, Bishop, I'm not really discouraged. I guess it's like having someone talk about your children in front of you and if it's anything other than unalloyed praise you wonder what you could have done differently.

I was a bit mortified to have Barb T. say that A would give a kilt maker nightmares, but I understand what she means and take the criticism in the manner she intended it - helpfully. No tartan designer wants to hear Barb say she'd rather not work with fabric they designed!

I'm sure also that the fact that I am the only speaker tomorrow at a memorial service for a cousing who no one can think of anything good to say about doesn't help my feelings either. I've been fretting about it all week and the only reason I agreed is I am hoping to make things easier for my Aunt. She has an image of him that is, shall we say, different from the rest of us and now that he's gone there's no reason for that to change. Once that's behind me I'm sure I'll be on an even keel once more. Right now it's a bit hard though.

Honestly, though, there's still a week left in the poll and there is no reason we can't change any or all of the three designs to something more to everyone's liking, or to come up with something entirely different. I really am in no hurry. I'd rather do it right than quick and since this is our project right now I think we have a lot of latitude in how we finalize this. Whatever design we choose we need to get some expert advice and tweak it to make sure it is suitable for kilts and other tartan applications. I won't mention a name because the offer was made in a PM, but we do have such an expert who is willing to help us make sure we have something that will satisfy the most particular kilt maker or owner.

    Regards,

    Brian

I still think we need some support/input from Societies in NY.... I think that would help a lot.....

    such as http://www.standrewsny.org/

I agree, Beerbecue. There must be some members or officers that are also members here. As long as we're doing this in an open forum there's no reason they can't participate like the rest of us. If you know any of them encourage them to check it out.

We can't do this on our own if we want the tartan to be accepted by more than ourselves and the legislature.

    Regards,

    Brian

PS - I would hope that they wouldn't have too strong an objection to the project or our designs - if they think they should be the ones to propose one they've had many years to do so

By the by, Bishop, I don't know if you've voted, but if you haven't go ahead. New Yorker or "interloper" all opinions are valued. Certainly, I want New Yorkers to be happy with this, but anyone who loves tartan and kilts has an opinion that I value. I think that simply by virtue of being interested enough to check out this thread you have the right to vote. I can't restrict it anyway!

    Regards,

    Brian

PS - despite my reluctance to express my opinions about these tartans earlier maybe I will take a moment when I get a chance to explain why I like each one of them. if nothing else it will let everyone know where I'm coming from. BK
