As the OP, my thinking about the form of modern kilts hasn't changed; they are, as Alan H has stated, UKs etc. What has changed is the organization of the whole site. Previous to the "new" Xmarks there was a clearly defined "contemporary kilt" sub-forum and I would not have posted this thread there. It would probably have gone under "general kilt talk" instead.

This recently redefined "modern kilt wear" sub-forum seems to me to be the place to discuss both modern kilts and less_than_traditional ways of wearing traditional kilts. This is indeed a change and I'd be interested to know how this was arrived at by the forum owner/mods? Or have I mis-intepreted what this sub-forum is intended for?

Has other people's thinking changed about what a modern kilt is?

Why would we want to? If we all got along I would never have known the wonder of Rocky's caual kilts, or connected so many other UK wearers, or learned about all the wonderful and different styles/tartans/makers of kilts. As long as the discussions are respectful, it is like one long night at your favorite pub having a firiendly (kilted) arguement over a pint!

Wow...the getting along thing was mainly sarcasm. I agree that we don't and should not have to. Maybe "agree to disagree" is more applicable.

I understand that this is basically a re-titled forum so some go with the current title and description and others for the old one. I don't see why both couldn't go in here. I suggested a separate forum for modern style kilts earlier, but in retrospect I think that segregating the discussions into such narrow topics would make it all bland and the whole thing would "dry up and die" pretty quickly.

And I agree that some conflict is good as it brings up good info, interesting topics and might from time to time influence someone to try something new. We're all here to share ideas and thoughts and narrowing the topics won't really do that.

Alan H has a poll going now to gage the current, past and future interests of members...sort of a kiltie census. I'm very interested in seeing the end result as so far the posts have been interesting.

And if those with a continued interest in contemporary modern kilts are shown to be a minority then they should be posting in the same forums as everyone else, lest they just become bored, cooped up, frustrated, and leave.

Beisides, I still haven't finished my x-kilt yet and I might have questions!!

I completely agree, both styles can be discussed here. It only requires some sensitivity and judgment from the participants. If you see a thread, or a topic within a thread that you (or I, or anyone) cannot reply to constructively, then move on to the next thread. It's simple common sense and courtesy.

But I started that poll because of something that YOU brought up. I, too will be interested in what it shows.

If the sensitivity and constructive part applies to me, then I apologize. I hope you don't get the idea that I was telling you that your point was invalid...I was simply stating that the title and description for this forum is a bit vague. It obviously doesn't say that it is for a specific style of kilt or a specific method of wearing it. On the other hand it doesn't really say that it isn't.

I agree whole-heartedly that there are a few who go on and on as if they are the finest example of a man wearing a kilt and that they do it exactly right...hopefully I don't come across as one of those. I have my style, which is moderately contemporary and will pass on my ideas and opinions, but with full aknowledgement of the fact that I am not a pure traditionalist(I like the term Neo-Traditionalis) and do things my own way while maintaining the spirit of traditional dress(albiet sometimes in flip flops).

I expected some heat for stating what I see coming down the road in the next decade or so. Didn't expect a firestorm.

I think that this thread has gotten WAAAAAY off topic...I cannot say that I don't share a great deal of the blame for that, though I was actually trying to get it on-topic. So much for that. It has started a few interesting discussions and ponderings though.
