New Kilt - Ideas Requested
Gents,
I'm looking for a new kilt, but I need some ideas on which tartan to go for next. I currently have a kilt in 13 oz Strathmore in the MacDonald of the Isles Hunting Ancient tartan. Looking for something that is either predominantly blue or red. I do like the MacDonald of the Isles Hunting Weathered, as the main colors are what looks to be Grey/Brown.
Any Ideas??
Thanks Gents..

If you are a MacDonald and looking for a predominantly red tartan, why not MacDonald of the Isles red?

Or the similar MacDonald of Sleat?

For a blue tartan, there is a blue version of the MacDonald Lord of the Isles that Strathmore weaves (in a light weight cloth only, you'd have to have it woven in a heavy weight).

Don't forget MacDonald of Keppoch:

MacDonad of Kingsburg:

MacDonald of Staffa:

MacDonald Glennadale:

MacDonald of Glencoe:

MacDonald of Boisdale:

MacDonald of Ardnamurchan:

A second for the Keppoch or the Kingsburgh, I've always loved those two.

Heh heh, there sure are a lot of you MacDonalds. I get reminded of that one every time I scroll down a listing of tartans.
Looks like you're set with variety for the rest of your days.

Since I am Scottish only through my maternal great-grandfather, whose surname was Fotheringham, my choice of tartans is limited.
I did wear a kilt in Graham of Montrose when I was in the army, but I am not certain whether I am entitled to as a civilian.
As a boy I had a tie in Lindsay Modern tartan (long since worn out) — my aunt was told the Fotheringhams belonged to Clan Lindsay. But again I am uncertain as to whether I ought to wear it in kilt format.
I have ties in Graham of Montrose and Jacobite 1712.
But having a German surname and being South African born and bred, I am not at all sure what I should go for.
The German district tartans I have seen are for regions far away from my paternal great-grandfather’s home, and I am not too keen on David McGill’s South Africa tartan.
I rather like the oranges of the Dutch and Prince of Orange tartans — what do you gentlemen think?

I have been organizing a custom run of Macdonell of Keppoch tartan in Wilsons or Dalgliesh reproduction colours for a while.
If you want it I am sure we will go forward with it sometime soon. Each person who definitely wants some brings us closer to our 30 yard minimum.
Here is the Grant tartan (very similar) in both of the colour schemes under consideration.
Wilsons colours.

And Reproduction or "weathered" colours.

Of course Macdonald of Clanranald in muted shade is a really nice tartan I have been eyeing for a while as well.

Matt/Riverkilt, et al..
Thank you for the kind suggestions! It's easy to get lost in the abundance that is the Tartan! I like the MacDonald of the Isles Red, as well as the MacDonald of Sleat. Both seem to be really nice tartan choices.
I'd say from here, I need to see swatches of material. Makes me wish I lived closer to you Matt!!
Again, I thank all of you for your gracious input. I do appreciate it.
Kindest Regards,
