I would second Hothir's selection, and would love to join other like minded individuals in getting the Macdonell of Keppoch woven in Wilsons colours!

Here is the Grant tartan (very similar) in both of the colour schemes under consideration.

    Wilsons colours.

    And Reproduction or "weathered" colours.

Of course Macdonald of Clanranald in muted shade is a really nice tartan I have been eyeing for a while as well.

Both of those tartans look fantastic! Can't decide if the modern or the weathered tartan would be best.. So many to choose from. This is my conundrum!

    Thanks..

    Kindest Regards,

    Visit Kathy Lare!

You could always shoot over to Alburquerque and visit with Kathy Lare. She has lots of swatches to look at and get the feel of. I believe that she might also be able to mail some of them to you.

Great Idea Gordon! Thank you, I didn't think about that!! I know that another Xmarks member, a fellow MacDonald ( Riverkilt i think) has one from Kathy Lare. I will definitely consider it.

    Thanks..

Here's another that's on my wish list - Macdonald in Wilson's of Bannockburn colours circa 1800:

One thing to think about, maybe, is how much red tartans are transformed when done in House Of Edgar's "muted" range.

The red becomes a lovely claret, the green becomes lighter- all the colours change. Sometimes people don't recognise that it's the same tartan.

In "modern" colours, with red tartans, sometimes the blue and green stripes are so dark that they look nearly black against the red. (In fact this has led to quite a few errors/alterations over the years.)

But in "muted" colours the red is darker, the green and blue lighter, so they co-exist and all can be seen for what they are.

Or the similar MacDonald of Sleat?

Both are derived from this portrait of the MacDonald children. The upper tartan Matt posted is a copy of the tartan of the jacket worn by the boy on the left.

The lower tartan Matt posted is a defective copy of the first.

In The Setts of the Scottish Tartans Donald C Stewart says:

"Early last century (the early 19th century) there was manufactured, and given distinguished patronage, a tartan called by the Smiths MacDonald of Sleat, Lord of the Isles. In Old and Rare Scottish Tartans DW Stewart drew attention to the fact that this was a defective rendering of the tartan shown in a painting (The MacDonald Children) at Armadale Castle. In The Costume of the Clans, by the brothers John Sobieski and Charles Edward Stuart (1845) there is a representation of the figures from that painting; not only was the black line omitted, but the narrower stripes are rendered in blue instead of green."

Lord of the Isles Hunting is derived from another Armadale Castle painting.

The green and blue MacDonald of the Isles is from the Vestiarium Scoticum (the famous forgery).

The normal MacDonald tartan, MacDonell of Keppoch, and MacDonald of Staffa and Boisdale and Kingsburgh all either exist in early collections or are based on 18th century relics.

Just in case anybody wondered where all these MacDonald tartans came from...

Dalgliesh will weave in this color scheme for their custom orders. Strathmore has four specific stock tartans that are woven in this color scheme in their 13oz. fabric.
