Sir Chris Hoy - Odd Jacket?

I noticed Sir Chris Hoy (he rides bicycles for anyone not aware) wearing an unusual jacket at the BAFTA awards the other night. I've found a number of photos of him in the same jacket getting K'd and getting married and lastly at the BAFTAs.

As it is shorter that a lounge suit jacket I think it was made to go with a kilt but without cutaways it does look a bit odd although not necessarily 'wrong'- what do you think?

And he leaves them all about,

Fashion is a movable feast and what appeals to one may not appeal to another. Sir Chris does look OK but I can't help feeling the would jacket would have looked better if it had been cutaway. Why look OK when you could look good? Is it 'change for changes' sake?

The practical reason for having the front cutaway is the sporran and I think the pictures illustrate the 'problem'.

    Has anyone else seen similar?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but yes, I have seen this style before.

I've also seen something a little more "extreme" in cut/style, illustrated in these photos from last year's Gathering & found in the Prince Charles Duke of Rothesay in kilt photo thread:

(note the gentleman 2nd from right)

    (& in these two photos)

it took me a wee bit to warm up to, because it was so very different than what I was used to seeing, but I actually like it now.

I would like it better if it were a wee bit cutaway - I'm interested to see what others think.

The jacket is not too bad, but I think that some one has tried to "re-invent the wheel" and failed----no, failed is the wrong word ----- not succeeded.

I think Sir Chris Hoy's jacket is what they call "the Wallace" but without the cutaway. As for the other jacket referenced, not my cup of tea at all. I think the Wallace with the cutaway is a style which could be a popular extension of the more traditional jackets we know. I like the style.

I have seen this style highlighted on the MacGregor MacDuff site http://www.macgregorandmacduff.co.uk...iltoutfits.htm.

I don't find it to be wrong...I actually kinda like it.
I believe that the intention of Sir Chris's jacket design is to be worn unbuttoned.
In that way the cutaway in not needed for it does not interfere with the sporran.

The second coat appears to be more of a jacket of overcoat that I like, but not wth a kilt. And the extreme cutaway on his right, definitely not for me.

But as someone once said.... "different horses for different courses"

    Seconded.

It looks too much like a plain old suit coat to me. Boring. Not 'wrong', necessarily. Just not a great match for the style that accentuates a kilt.
