    Morning Suit Equivalent

A kilted friend of mine, who is not yet a member of this forum, has been invited to a very formal wedding in the south of France where a Morning Suit is required. My friend is very traditional, and will speak with the bride about his attire. However, if the bride gives the go-ahead...what would be the ultimate formal morning suit equivalent for a kilted gent?

    Thanks one and all

Either a Montrose Doublet with jabot (what I would choose) or a Prince Charlie jacket with a white bow tie and three-button waistcoat. Under the jacket, a full 8-yard wool kilt, full fur sporran, full argyle hose with sgian dubh and solid color flashes, and polished black shoes.

I have read here on the forum, in fact been told over and over, that the silver button, black fine wool, Argyle jacket and five button waistcoat, along with the four-in-hand tie, is the equivalent of the Morning suit.

It is singed into my soul at this point, and I will break out in a nervous rash if I do not post this.

I believe the jacket you are talking about is the Barathea?

Yes, the silver button, Barathea Argyle with five button waistcoat.

Although, I do recall a member, Phil, once posting that the doublets could be worn for day weddings, but the question was about an equal to the morning suit.

It's just something I learned on the forum, so if it's wrong, I am sorry.

Seems to me that if the other men are in grey jackets, wearing a black jacket would make you not match.

If price was no object I myself would obtain a jacket in grey of about the same tone as Morning Dress jackets, and get a kilt in a grey tartan such as Highland Granite. Grey hose as well.

In other words, I would try to acutally match in with the other men, rather than theoretically match.

A jacket and kilt like this, but the jacket of fine grey barathea, not rustic tweed:

I really don't believe this is correct. A Morning Coat is just that, a Morning Coat. It is usually worn for weddings. It is not formal white-tie evening attire, one equivalent of which is the Montrose Doublet with jabot. Also, although I guess it's possible to wear a Prince Charlie jacket with a white bow tie and three-button waistcoat, the Prince Charlie is really not a white-tie jacket, either. For white-tie occasions, one would be better off with a Montrose, Sheriffmuir, Kenmore, or Regulation Doublet. Again, though, none of these options would be the equivalent to a Morning Coat.

Perhaps the question here should be: What is appropriate kilted attire for a morning wedding? FWIW, the Highlanders on the forum have made it clear that THCD for this event would be a tweed jacket/waistcoat combination in either a traditional tweed or the more modern charcoal color, with the appropriate hose and a day sporran.

    Cordially,

    David

I have to respectfully disagree with you here. Why would you create a kilted outfit that attempts to conform to non-kilted attire norms? For my bit, I'd suggest either wearing the appropriate kilted equivalent without regard to this business of matching or scrap the plan and wear what the rest of the male participants will be wearing. I'm having a hard time seeing a connection, anyway, between a wedding in the South of France and Highland Culture, unless the friend in question is kilted all the time...

That's evening dress, not morning dress.

Morning coats are usually black, or at least a very dark, dark grey. Mine certainly is black. Now one can have a great morning suit, but that would fall under the "extras" category.
