Not a major peeve, but I thought worth a hoot:
At the Celtic Fling in Lancaster, PA last year, I was strutting along in my Thompson Grey casual from USAK and a black t-shirt with "Real Men Wear Kilts" in white letters on the front. I noticed a fellow wearing the same shirt walking towards me in the crowd. As he came close enough, I saw his lower half was covered by...
Wait for it....
Bermuda Shorts.
I guess he was making some sort of statement.
I saw this guy too. My wife couldn't understand why I was shaking my head ...
Maybe he'll be in proper attire this year.

Yes, with real Bermuda shorts.
See cajunscot's post.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

Belly dancing (at least the American cabaret style) is something that for better or worse, I have been exposed to for several years. My wife took it up as a hobby several years ago, and I can tell you that I think it would be cheaper to buy a new kilt every year than some of those costumes.
That being said, I have learned that there are two previlent styles, one which sort of lends itself to ren faires (although not, no matter how hot the dancers, to Scottish games) and the other which should really be confined to restaurants and bars as it is mostly the entertainment provided at dinner shows. Sadly the pic with the big red wings, is an example of the second in an environment best suited for the first. It is every bit as anachronistic as much of what we have been talking about in this thread. Using modern shiny almost vegaesque costumes at any even vaguely historical festival is like wearing one of those leprechaun hats with the fake orange beard to a Scottish games.

Main pet peeve would be the kilt that's 'waaay too long while the hose are too high (an abomination, as someone put it), and a close second would be those who show up in pants.

I am, and yes, it's rough. The only lenses I buy are the UV blockers...if I could get them with a dark tint as well, I'd be happy...it's the intensity in the visible spectrum that's so painful.

If someone were to run in the room and yell "kilt check", rather than look for wayward hands, I'd place a hand on the apron to hold it in place on my leg and check where the hem sits in relation to my knee. It only takes a moment, and it's hardly noticeable...and then adjust waist if necessary (usually it's not necessary). One hand width below the bottom edge of the kneecap for the top of the hose, and I'm ready to step out...easy as that! To those gentle souls who may not be aware of this...if your hem is too low (or high), and your socks are too high, it looks like a skirt...don't do that .

For those who didn't get it, in Glasgow everyone is either addressed as Big Yin if they are tall or Jimmy if not! It's said to make it easier when you've had a few too many whiskeys!

That makes sense! I had a coworker who had suffered brain damage in a mountain biking accident and couldn't remember names. He was a big Star Wars fan, so anyone with facial got called Chewie and anyone without, he called Han.
