Far too many photos to post here, but for those who wish to "wax nostalgic" and peruse photos of Northern California pipe bands from days of yore, this is your web site:

    http://www.stewarttartan.com/v3YORE.htm

Of particular interest are the photos of the 6th US Army Pipe Band at the Presidio and the 360th Regiment, 91st Division (USAR) Pipe Band.

The photo is of Surgeon Lieut.-Colonel Alexander Stewart of Achnacone.
If I am not mistaken, his son Iain Stewart [Achnacone] led the 2d Bn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in the Malayan Penninsula during WWII, who with a force of Marines became the Plymouth Argylls. Although they were ultimately defeated by the invading Japanese, Col. Stewart was credited with then innovative jungle training of the Argylls that allowed them to fight brilliantly and effectively against the Japanese. Those wishing to read more about that campaign may want to pick up a copy of "Moon Over Malaya", a soldier's eye-view of that campaign.
"Before two notes of the theme were played, Colin knew it was Patrick Mor MacCrimmon's 'Lament for the Children'...Sad seven times--ah, Patrick MacCrimmon of the seven dead sons....'It's a hard tune, that', said old Angus. Hard on the piper; hard on them all; hard on the world." Butcher's Broom, by Neil Gunn, 1994 Walker & Co, NY, p. 397-8.
