I have a bodhran but I rarely play it. They're not always welcome at the session, so I stick with pipes.

Unfortunately i dont have pipes to fall back on. and if i did, they really wouldnt be welcome since i have never played a lick in my life
the trick is to play soft. almost so soft that only you can hear it. then after a extensive time playing soft. you can slowly increase the volume, by then they have gotten used to the bodhran being there and they are happy they can barely hear it
