Um…I don’t think that is a silhouette of a rattlesnake! Something much worse, in my opinion. Bigger, faster, more deadly, and less warning (no rattle).

I do miss the good old days, when I too was a geologist by trade. Still love the science and history, even though it no longer pays the bills.

The snake on the sign is a Cape cobra. Not a plaything, by any means.
Its profile is much the same as the Egyptian cobra.
We also have the boomslang (especially up there north of the Vaal), the black mamba and the puff adder.
Actually, I once found a puff adder no more than 20 metres from my property boundary in a piece of open veld. I did not disturb it.
Need to wear boots in the veld!
    Regards,
    Mike

Yah - that's why I said, "..NOT just pesky things like rattlesnakes..."

I do recognize a silouette of a cobra when I see one!!! That's actually what I thought was so truly fabulous about the sign. Gives you a bit more of a jolt than "beware of the dog...."
