Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate the opinions and advice, but I am not asking whether ghillies are worthwhile or not. I am dead-set on buying a pair as I like the way they look. My question was whether to buy from Loakes or Thistle Co.
I already own very fine brogues in brown and black, and just want some variety. I have tried on the Thistle model, but Loakes ghillies do not exist stateside and I cannot try them on for effect.
I am sure you can all identify with my little streak of dandyism. At least that is my assumption, given the level of wrathful obsessiveness in evidence in the threads dealing with attire in the Forum section, which i have been perusing with great mirth.
I agree with the majority in this regard and feel the ghillies look a bit too much like dancing shoes for my taste. I have to admit that I'm prone to "streaks of dandyism" from time to time, so I can't blame you for getting and wearing what you like! Since that is the case, MacMillan of Rathdown said his preference was the Loaks. Though I'm still pretty new here and have no experience with the shoes in question, I can assure you that MacMillan of Rathdown's advice is always sound.

    Welcome aboard!

    can we switch the subject?

OK, all. got the message: brogues, half-brogues, construction boots, doc martens, crocs, penny loafers... hell, seems like anything is better than a pair of ghillies, except maybe red stilletto pumps...LOL!
I am still getting the Loakes, so sorry, even if I only get to wear them with my surgical scrubs.
now for the REAL BIZ: WHISKY. yes, call it i am a scotch-freak. right now my kitchen cabinet boasts less than half-full bottles of Cragganmore, Speyburn, Tobermory, Balvenie, Oban, and Glenlivet.
Always on the lookout for special brews I may not be aware of, so how about a quick, dirty and informal survey of your favorites?
Also, has anyone done a scotch distilleries tour and lived to tell the tale?

    Talking

First of all welcome from Athens, Georgia.
Second, hey you like what you like ultimately it will always be your decision. Personally if I had to choose I would choose the Loakes. However I don't own ghillies and really I have never had anyone ask about them (aside from the rabble)
As far as whisky goes-I'm a Jameson man myself, however being a Staunch Southerner- I like Jack Daniels (I know not the same as Scotch but whatever) And when some of my people are "runnin" I usually get some stump-hole-water or mule kick or whatever you want to call it.
Welcome to the rabble-Home of No White Socks with Kilts

    Welcome to the forum.

I have normal black brogues by both Loake and Thistle. They appear to be equally well made. The Thistles are a bit more flexible and the Loakes shine up better. For long walks I prefer the Thistles; for appearance the Loakes.
