    The more I think about this thread, the more I remember the things that influenced my sense of proper dress and where my "matchy" instincts might have their roots.

    Your post sounds so familiar! Dark grey or dark blue suit, crisp white shirt, striped tie in muted colors or solid tie with small dots, highly polished wingtips (brogues) in either black or cordovan leather... based on observations of my father I wouldn't have known that men wore anything else. My Great Uncle, another big influence, was the sauve "fashion plate" in the family. He actually had some suits with subtle pin stripes.

    I am certain that neither of them ever owned a striped or patterned shirt for business wear.
