My son was making his way through my collection at a horrifying rate, so I gave him my bottle of Old Pultney (now gone too). It was OK, but reminded me of fuel oil, which I normally avoid.

Just goes to show that different people's taste-buds do different things for them

English Bloke likes Auchentoshan. I like Dalwhinnie and Old Pulteney.

I know the OP was asking about Scotch but I wanted to give waring about this bourbon whiskey. George T Stagg!!! Proceed with caution with this one. Heard nothing but rave reviews and thought what the heck I will give it a try I like an occasional dram of whiskey. Yikes, it tasted like turpentine. It is 70% alcohol people, not good, not good at all.

When I was first getting into scotch and trying to develop my palatte, I tried a bottle of 10 year old Glen Garioch. It had a musty taste to it that overpowered any other flavors it had. To this day it is still the worst single malt that I've ever tried!

I was wondering if it was the bottle I got. It was aged 21 years, so I assumed it would be really nice. Yes, "Pulteney" is correct..

I've found that as I've expanded my tasting knowledge of single malts some that I did not like at the beginning I now either like or can at least tolerate. I have a small Whisky guide that fits in a sporran that I make notes in. Recently I found that some single malts I now like I didn't 2-3 years ago. And more often than not, I'm making fewer negative notes in my guide and more positive ones.

I've also found that there are times when I prefer a particular style such as Islay or Speyside, or even a specific single malt.

I'm thinking there are no bad single malts, just some that I prefer to others. That said, I'm always willing to try a new one and I'm still trying to come to favorable terms with Lowland whiskys.

By the way, I also like Old Pulteney. Had it the first time last year at the end of a very trying day. It was recommended as a favorite of the Borders.
