The desiccant is probably not a good idea as it may tend to draw the moisture out of the leather, causing it to dry out over time.

Respectfully, I disagree. If this were the case they wouldn't ship leather goods (jackets, shoes, etc) with silica gel packets. The time it would take to draw the moisture out of the leather would probably be measurable in decades and not months.

All I know is that the furrier who stores my wife's fur coats says not to use silica desiccants as it is harmful to the hairs, and may cause them to fall out. Since most jackets and shoes are made from leather that has had the hair removed the silica gel pacs may be perfectly harmless. I suspect their use in shipping is to reduce the possibility of staining caused by damp or mildew, but as I am not a currier I really couldn't say with any certainty.

Please keep in mind that hair-on hides are not the same thing as full grain leather. Hair hides are MUCH pickier about their atmosphere than regular leather.

I had to deal with international shipping both on the receiving and sending side for over a decade. TERRIBLE things can happen to shipping containers.

The desiccant IS in there for the varied climatic exposure the goods are exposed to in transit, NOT for long term storage.

Putting anything furry away for any length of time would worry me, as if any insect life got into it you could have bald patches in no time at all.

My grandparents used to use tissue paper with little skull and crossbones on it - it was impregnated with poison for just such purposes. I suppose it was too tempting to soak the paper and make up auntie's cocoa with the result, but it did make storing fur hats, stoles and gloves less chancy.

I'd recommend regular inspections just in case the dreaded moth has got to it - they love dark and undisturbed places for their nurseries.

As for the rest of Stinky, you would have to ask L&M about that. I did forget to mention that Stinky's American cousins have been about lately, maybe I should introduce them!!!

I don't consider winter storage as long term. Not like my mothers or G-mothers mink soles / jackets. Am I incorrect in assuming this???

The cloth bag (pillow case) and cedar moth balls (have those in with kilt and jacket) are easily doable. I would guess that the pillow case should be natural fiber (cotton) for best "breath-ability"?
